MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In a neutral site match held at the Charleston Tennis Club in Charleston, W.Va., the West Virginia University women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 68 Virginia Tech, 5-2.
“Again, we fought hard today,” said coach Tina Samara. “Our girls need to understand the importance of displaying intensity from the first point. If we can do that, we will start to see some gains on the court.”
The Hokies (7-2) began the day by earning the doubles points, as they took two of the three doubles matches.
Seniors Emily Mathis
and Audrey Wooland
earned the lone doubles victory for the Mountaineers, as they defeated Emily Lauten and Ilinca Stoica, 9-8 (4). The victory was the duo’s team-leading sixth doubles win in eight matches this season.
“In the No. 1 doubles match, we went down 4-0 and rallied back to 7-6,” Samara said. “Not getting the doubles point hurt us. We have to stop starting slow in our matches.”
In singles play, WVU received victories from Ikttesh Chahal
and Hailey Barrett
Chahal earned her third singles win and second in as many weeks by defeating Kelly Williford, 6-2, 6-3.
Barrett’s win, which was her third of the season as well, knocked off Isel Martinez-Marcos, 6-3, 6-3.
“Ikttesh and Hailey did a great job of taking care of business against two solid players,” Samara said. “We will need the same type of effort from them tomorrow in order to compete for a win.”
Virginia Tech closed out the match by winning at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Audrey Wooland
nearly defeated Ilinca Stoica, but she fell short in the third set.
“Audrey was so close to breaking through for a win,” Samara said. “She has to continue to get fit in order to get wins against opponents of that caliber, especially when it comes down to the third set. Emily and Vivian battled, but they couldn’t make things happen. It is not going to get any easier, but we are proving that we are knocking at the door against these ranked and much more established programs.”
The Mountaineers (1-7) return to the court on Sunday morning, as they take on Marquette (9-5) at 10 a.m., at the Ridgeview Racquet Club. ResultsSingles
