MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team is down five spots to No. 21 in this week’s GymInfo Poll.

The Mountaineers’ (10-7, 1-1 Big 12) drop comes despite scoring their second-highest mark of the season, 196.375, in a second-place effort at their home quad-meet on March 3. The team has tallied 196.0+ scores in each of its home meets this season. Only the 2004 gymnastics team scored more 196.0+ marks in a single year.

WVU’s ranking is based on its 195.625 regional qualifying score (RQS). An RQS is calculated by taking a squad or gymnast’s six highest scores, three of which must be from a road meet, dropping the top score and averaging the remaining five marks.

The Mountaineers’ RQS is derived from the average of the following six scores, with the highest one not counting: 196.55 (Feb. 24), 196.375 (March 3), 196.15 (Feb. 10), 195.775 (Feb. 17), 195.15 (Jan. 25) and 194.675 (Jan. 11). Yesterday’s score allowed WVU to no longer count its 196.05 score earned on Feb. 1. The potential is still strong for the Mountaineers to climb up the chart in the coming weeks, as the team has two more road meets – at George Washington on March 10 and at Iowa State for the Big 12 Championships on March 23.

WVU continues to rank nationally on three events. The team ranks No. 17 (49.075) on floor, No. 18 (49.09) on vault and No. 22 (48.825) on beam. The squad sits at No. 33 (48.695) on bars.

The same four Mountaineers continue to combine for five national rankings. Freshman Jaida Lawrence owns the team’s top ranking and checks in at No. 27 (9.88) on vault. Following her first overall win of the season, junior Hope Sloanhoffer ranks No. 31 (39.06) in the all-around, while senior Alaska Richardson ranks No. 39 (9.865) on floor. Classmate Kaylyn Millick ranks No. 39 (38.96) in the all-around and No. 43 (9.86) on floor.

After one week at No. 2, Florida usurps Oklahoma and moves back to the No. 1 (197.44) spot. The Sooners drop to No. 2 (197.41), while Michigan holds steady at No. 3 (197.08). LSU and Alabama switch spots and rank No. 4 (196.965) and No. 5 (196.91), respectively.

The Mountaineers continue to rank No. 3 in the southeast region. The team also ranks No. 3 on beam, No. 4 on vault and floor and No. 5 on bars.

Sloanhoffer and Millick own a combined 10 regional rankings. Sloanhoffer, a Cornwall, N.Y., native, ranks No. 4 in the all-around, No. 17 (9.77) on bars, No. 18 (9.805) on vault, No. 19 (9.765) on beam and No. 20 (9.785) on floor. Millick, a native of Washington, Pa., ranks No. 6 on floor, No. 7 in the all-around, No. 8 (9.815) on beam, No. 15 (9.79) on bars and No. 18 (9.805) on vault.

Richardson paces the floor unit at No. 5, while freshman Melissa Idell ranks behind Millick and Sloanhoffer at No. 23 (9.775). She follows Lawrence, who ranks No. 8, in the vault poll at No. 11 (9.85).

Junior Erica Smith ranks No. 21 (9.775) on bars, while sophomore Lia Salzano and junior Amanda Carpenter rank No. 16 (9.77) and No. 23 (9.725), respectively, on beam.

For the second straight week, WVU ranks No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference behind OU. The team also ranks behind the Sooners on each event.

Lawrence is the team’s top-ranked gymnast in the conference, as the Rocky Hill, Conn., native checks in at No. 3 on vault. She is followed by Richardson at No. 6 and Sloanhoffer and Millick at No. 8.

Sloanhoffer also ranks No. 5 in the all-around, No. 8 on bars and No. 10 on beam and floor, while Millick ranks No. 6 in the all-around and on floor, and No. 7 on bars and beam.

Richardson ranks No. 5 on floor, while Salzano ranks No. 9 on beam and Smith ranks No. 10 on bars.

The Mountaineers close out their regular-season road schedule at GW this Sunday, with a 1 p.m. meet at the Charles E. Smith Center, in Washington, D.C.
