WVU Heads to Snowbird Baseball Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team will begin a nine-game road trip this weekend with the Snowbird Baseball Classic at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Mountaineers will face Bowling Green (March 7 – 6 p.m.), Central Michigan (March 8 – 3 p.m.), Maine (March 9 – 11 a.m.) and Iowa (March 10 – 11 a.m.).

Most recently, West Virginia defeated Eastern Kentucky, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Hawley Field. Third baseman Ryan Tuntland led the team with three hits, including a triple. Tuntland is now batting .414 with six runs, one double, one triple and three RBIs. Left-hander Zach Bargeron made his first start of the season, allowing one run on two hits in 4.2 innings.

Left fielder Jacob Rice continues to lead West Virginia at the plate, batting .429 with five runs, two doubles and eight RBIs. Tied with Rice for the team lead in RBIs is designated hitter Matt Frazer, who hit his first home run of the season against Eastern Kentucky, a two-run shot.

Coach Randy Mazey will send right-hander Corey Walter (0-2, 4.66 ERA) to the mound against Bowling Green, left-hander Harrison Musgrave (1-0, 5.50 ERA,) will take on Central Michigan, left-hander John Means (2-0, 0.75 ERA) will battle Maine and the weekend will close with right-hander Dan Dierdorff (1-2, 7.43 ERA) opposing Iowa.

Central Michigan and Iowa will send right-handers Jordan Foley (2-0, 0.98 ERA) and Calvin Mathews (0-2, 4.50 ERA), respectively, to face the Mountaineers. Bowling Green and Maine starters are to be determined.

Bowling Green is led at the plate by Patrick Lancaster, who is hitting .367 on the year with two doubles and four RBIs. Bowling Green is batting .239 as a team with seven doubles, two triples and one homer.

Central Michigan is hitting a cumulative .236 as a team with 16 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 21 steals in 26 attempts. They are led by Nick Regnier, who is batting .298 with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs.

Maine, who is playing eight games in the tournament, is led by Troy Black, who is hitting .395 with two doubles and four RBIs. As a team, the Black Bears are hitting .277 with 21 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 15 steals on 21 attempts.

Iowa is hitting .249 as a team with eight doubles and one home run. They are led by Kris Goodman, who is batting .400 with four RBIs.
