Burnett and Nugent Qualify for NCAAs

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seniors Rachael Burnett and Mandie Nugent have qualified for the 2013 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on March 21-23 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind., as announced Wednesday night.

This is the fourth trip to the championships for Nugent, while Burnett will be making her third trip.

“We are so excited for Rachael and Mandie. It's been a great four years coaching them. I'm honored to be able to see them complete their WVU careers at the highest level,” coach Vic Riggs says. “It's our seventh straight year making NCAAs and that is a tremendous feat for this program. Both ladies have an excellent opportunity to do something special in their events and we'll work hard from now till they swim to get them prepared but they are ready.”

Burnett is coming off a stellar weekend at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships where she won three individual events for the second-consecutive season and broke three school records and a Big 12 record on her way to being named the 2013 Big 12 Most Outstanding Women’s Swimmer. Burnett will go into the NCAA meet ranked No. 11 in the 500 free (4:38.40), No. 20 in the 200 free (1:45.22) and No. 13 in the 1,650 free (16:04.26).

Nugent also had an outstanding weekend at the conference championships where she won her fourth consecutive conference title in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.82, which is seeded No. 13 in the country. Nugent is also seeded No. 30 in the 100 fly (52.67) and No. 34 in the 500 free (4:42.38).

A total of 322 participants (281 swimmers and 41 divers) will compete in the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the swimming portion of the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers will be determined by performances achieved at the Zone Diving meets March 11-17. Additionally, ESPNU will air a 90-minute show at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 27.
