PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A one-out single by Mike Connolly in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted Maine to a 2-1 win over West Virginia on Saturday afternoon at North Charlotte Regional Park.

West Virginia, who falls to 6-8 overall, recorded nine hits with two errors in the loss. Center fielder Bobby Boyd led WVU with three hits, while right fielder Brady Wilson and shortstop Michael Constantini each had two hits apiece.

WVU reliever Pascal Paul allowed a hit through the right side to Alex Calbick to open the bottom of the 12th, and Calbick was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by Brian Doran. After a single by Eric White to advance Calbick to third, Connolly hit a bleeder just over the reach of first baseman Ryan McBroom to score Calbick.

WVU received another strong outing from left-hander John Means, who worked 8.0 innings and limited Maine to no earned runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Means dropped his earned-run average to 0.45.

Maine starter A.J. Bazdanes was just as effective, allowing just one run on eight hits in 9.0 innings of work. Bazdanes struck out one and allowed one walk. D.J. Voisine pitched the final three innings of relief for his second victory of the season. Voisine only surrendered one hit and struck out one.

Constantini gave WVU a 1-0 lead in the third inning, scoring on a two-out single up the middle by Boyd. WVU held the lead until the bottom of the ninth inning.

Maine’s Sam Balzano reached on an error by McBroom to lead off the half-inning. Balzano was brought home after advancing on a Colin Gay single and scoring on a Scott Heath single.

Gay led Maine with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate. Connolly added two hits for the Black Bears.

WVU wraps up the Snowbird Baseball Classic on Sunday against Maine. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. Live stats will be available via WVUsports.com.
