Six Divers Travel to NCAA Zones

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University diving squad will send six members to the NCAA Zone “A” Championships this weekend at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center at Virginia Tech University.

“It’s great to be here with a strong group of divers,” diving coach Michael Grapner says. “Last year we discussed the advantages of team support and this year we have it. All of the divers have been working hard this year.”

Qualifiers for the men include juniors Richard Pokorny and Liam McLaughlin, and freshman Christian Parker, who will be competing on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

Women’s qualifiers include sophomores Haily VandePoel and Jennifer Rey, and freshman Lindsay Schmidt, who also will be competing on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

All six divers are coming off strong showings in the Big 12 Championships. For the men, Pokorny placed third (317.00) in the 1-meter, and placed fifth (335.75) in the 3-meter. Parker placed fifth (293.55) on the 1-meter and eighth (302.60) in the 3-meter. McLaughlin placed fourth (300.55) in the 1-meter and sixth (318.05) in the 3-meter.

For the women, VandePoel finished fifth (305.70) on the 3-meter and sixth (269.75) on the 1-meter, while Schmidt finished eighth (265.80) in the 1-meter. Rey placed ninth (236.65) in the 1-meter and 16th (222.40) in the 3-meter.

The competition starts with the men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter on Friday, the women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter will be held on Saturday. The meet will start at 10 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
