MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team is set to open its spring season at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on the Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on March 16-17, with racing set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The Mountaineers have six entries prepared to race in the two-day regatta.

Three crews will be racing in the women’s 8+ competition and three crews will be competing in the women’s 4+ competition.

“Given that this is our first competition of the season there are, of course, lots of unknowns,” says coach Jimmy King. “I do know, however, that our team is eager to compete. We're planning to change line-ups through the three rounds of racing, not only to better evaluate our team, but to also provide opportunities to those who have earned it since we began team workouts back in August.”

Rounds one and two of the regatta are set for Saturday, with round three taking place on Sunday.

The Mountaineers will be racing against Duke, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Alabama, Buffalo, Dayton, Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame and Virginia.

This is the first time in program history that the Mountaineers are competing at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational Regatta.

“Due to our move to the Big 12 and affiliation with Conference USA, we did alter our scheduling to include this regatta, not only because of the level of competition we'll face, but also because we'll return to this site at the end of the season for the C-USA championship,” King adds.

WVU starts day one of racing on Saturday in round one against University of Louisville and University of Virginia at 9:30 a.m., with round two following at 5:15 p.m., against University of Dayton and University of Miami. The Mountaineers are set to conclude racing on Sunday in round three against University of Buffalo and Georgetown University at 11:20 a.m.
