MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The West Virginia University diving squad completed the first day of competition at the NCAA Zone “A” Championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center at Virginia Tech.

Six divers were in the field for the Mountaineers today, competing in both the men’s 1-meter and the women’s 3-meter board.

“It was a tough contest for the men and women. I’m pleased with the divers today. The men gave an honest effort, and were just short of finals,” said diving coach Michael Grapner.

Sophomore Haily VandePoel continued her impressive season, placing seventh overall in the 3-meter with a score of 293.10, Freshman Lindsay Schmidt placed 25th with a score of 234.25, while sophomore Jenn Rey placed 34th with a score of 203.90.

Haily VandePoel had an outstanding day on the 3-meter, fifth after prelims, and seventh overall,” said Grapner. “Her goal was top eight and she accomplished that goal today.”

In the men’s event, juniors Richard Pokorny, and Liam McLaughlin, placed 20th (262.20), and 22nd (258.45), respectively. Freshman Christian Parker placed 37th with a score of 223.30.

“Tomorrow is another full day of competition and I feel good about it,” said Grapner.

Tomorrow’s competition includes the women’s 1-meter and the men’s 3-meter. A full recap will be available on WVUsports.com.
