MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five West Virginia University gymnasts were named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team, the league office announced today.
“First and foremost, these are student-athletes and I’m proud of the WVU gymnasts that were honored,” says second-year coach Jason Butts. “Our primary focus is to always make sure we’re at the top of our academic game. I’m glad we placed these five gymnasts on the first team, but our goal is to place more in the future.”
Seniors Chelsea Goldschrafe
(marketing) and Kaylyn Millick
(exercise physiology), juniors Hope Sloanhoffer
(exercise physiology) and Bethany Yurko
(design studies) and sophomore Lia Salzano
(exercise physiology) were named to the first team.
In total, 18 student-athletes earned the honor, with Oklahoma landing a conference-best seven honors. Seventeen of the 18 honorees were placed on the first team, which consists of gymnasts who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The No. 25-ranked Mountaineers (13-7, 1-1 Big 12) will compete at their first Big 12 Gymnastics Championship this Saturday, March 23, at Iowa State’s Hilton Coliseum, in Ames, Iowa. The meet, set for a 3 p.m. EST start, will be televised by FOX Sports Net on a date to be determined.
