Nugent Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s swimmer Mandie Nugent has been named Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week for her performance at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Nugent became the first female swimmer in WVU history to be named an All-American with her seventh-place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.61.

The Greater Manchester, England, native finished her career at WVU with three national honors, as she garnered All-America Honorable Mention last year as a member of the 800 free relay team and in the 200 fly.

Women’s Basketball
-This Week in Women’s Basketball
The Mountaineers have completed their 2012-13 season with a 17-14 overall record and fourth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.

-Last Week in Women’s Basketball
The West Virginia University women’s basketball team had its season come to a close Sunday afternoon with a 66-53 loss to No. 15/16 Delaware in the first round of the 2013 NCAA women’s basketball tournament at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Four Mountaineers earned all-Big 12 honors … junior Christal Caldwell was one of 10 players named to the All-Big 12 First Team … senior Ayana Dunning earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors … junior Jess Harlee was named to the Big 12 All-Defensive Team … Bria Holmes earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Freshman team … the Mountaineers closed out regular-season Big 12 play with a 9-9 record, which was good for sixth place.

The West Virginia University track and field team returns to the track on March 29-30 for the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Mountaineers continued their outdoor season with the California (Pa.) Early Bird Meet March 23 … WVU had seven first-place finishes at the meet.

At the Early Bird Meet, Heather Adams notched two first-place finishes in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.97 meters and the discus with a mark of 45.99 meters … in the pole vault, the Mountaineers took the top three sports with Katlyn Shelar placing first with a mark of 3.85 meters … Kiley Defibaugh and Lindsay Kopenhaver came in second and third, respectively … In the 400-meter days, Shakiyla Cosby took top honors with a time of 59.03 … the 4x400-meter relay team of Cosby, Arielle Gaither, Ashanti Bess and Christ D’Egidio also placed first with a time of 3:56.63 … D’Egidio and Gaither also recorded first-place finishes in the 800-meter run and the 400-meter hurdles, respectively.

Seniors Rachael Burnett and Mandie Nugent participated in the Women’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships last weekend, leading WVU to a 31st place finish overall.

Nugent became the first female swimmer in WVU history to be named an All-American with her seventh-place finish in the 200 fly (1:55.61) … Burnett was named an Honorable Mention All-American with a 16th overall finish in the 500 free (4:41.91) … the duo is one of the best to go through the women’s swimming program, combining for eight All-America honors.

The Mountaineers traveled to Texas for two dual matches … on Friday, they were defeated by No. 20 Texas Tech (11-4, 2-0 Big 12), 6-1 and on Sunday, they were blanked by No. 22 Texas (8-8, 4-0 Big 12), 7-0.

In doubles play against the Longhorns, Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal scored an upset victory over No. 19 Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott … the win was the duo’s fifth doubles victory of the season … four players (Vivian Tsui, Hailey Barrett, Emily Mathis and Ikttesh Chahal) are tied for the team lead in singles victories … doubles partners Audrey Wooland and Mathis own the team lead with eight doubles victories … Mathis holds the team lead with 14 combined victories.

WVU (13-9, 1-3 Big 12), then-No. 25, scored a 194.675 and finished third at the Big 12 Gymnastics Championships on March 23, at Iowa State’s Hilton Coliseum … No. 2 Oklahoma won its second straight title with a 197.2 score, while the host Cyclones finished second with a 196.175 … WVU finished second on vault (49.1) and beam (48.975), and third on floor (48.725) and bars (47.875) … senior Kaylyn Millick scored 39.2 and finished second overall … junior Hope Sloanhoffer scored 39.075 and finished fourth … senior Alaska Richardson paced the team on floor and finished sixth overall with a 9.85 … Richards, Millick and freshman Jaida Lawrence tied for fourth on vault with 9.85s … Sloanhoffer paced the team on bars with a 10th place, 9.775 finish … Millick finished a team-best eighth on beam with a 9.825.

The WVU baseball team will play five non-conference games this week, including four at Hawley Field … on Tuesday, WVU will travel to Eastern Kentucky to take on the Colonels at 3 p.m. … this weekend (Thursday-Sunday), WVU will host New Orleans … the Thursday and Friday games begin at 3 p.m., while Saturday’s game begins at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s finale is set for a 1 p.m. start.

The Mountaineers went 2-2 last week, winning their first Big 12 series with two wins against Texas Tech in Charleston … earlier in the week, WVU fell 8-0 to Marshall.

Starting pitching led WVU this past weekend, as Harrison Musgrave, Corey Walter and John Means combined for a 2-0 record with a 1.64 ERA … they also struck out 23 batters in 22.0 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits … offensively, third baseman Ryan Tuntland went 7-for-13 (.538) with two runs, one double, one home run and four RBIs.
