Track Splits Up for Weekend Competition

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team will split up this weekend with the jumpers headed to the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala., on April 5-6, while the rest of the team travels to the Ohio Team Challenge in Athens, Ohio on April 6.

Competition at the Hutsell-Rosen Track begins at 11 a.m., on Friday and will continue on Saturday at Auburn. Javelin and long jump are the first field events at Ohio on Saturday at noon, with the 5,000-meter run being the first event on the track at 2 p.m.

The jumpers were last in action three weeks ago at the Wake Forest Open where senior Sydney Cummings finished tied for second in the high jump, with a personal-best leap of 1.78 meters. Cummings is now tied for third in high jump in WVU program history. Hannah Stone also competed in the high jump and tied for 10th with a mark of 1.63 meters.

Last weekend at the Stanford Invitational, senior Jordan Hamric shattered the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hamric placed seventh in section two of the event with a time of 10:17.58 and broke the previous school record of 10:25.93 set by Susan Davis in 2006 by eight seconds. Hamric’s time ranks No. 9 in the country and No. 2 in the Big 12.

Junior Sarah Martinelli and senior Aubrey Moskal also competed Friday evening on the Cobb Track in the 5,000-meter run. Both posted personal-best times in section three of the event, with Martinelli placing 24th with a time of 16:45.66, while Moskal finished 31st with a time of 17:14.93. Senior Sarah-Anne Brault was the final competitor for WVU in the 10,000-meter run. Brault finished in 26th place of section one of the event with a time of 34:56.70.
