WACO, Texas – The WVU baseball team left eight men on base as it fell 8-0 to Baylor on Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark, evening the three-game series.

The loss ends an eight game WVU win streak and drops the overall record to 17-14 (4-4 Big 12), while Baylor improves to 15-16 overall with a 4-3 mark in conference play.

As a team, the Mountaineers recorded eight hits with junior third baseman Ryan Tuntland singling three times for the second-consecutive day.

Baylor’s Grayson Porter put the Bears on the board with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning. The center field shot was the first of the series and the fifth of the season for Porter.

Porter gave Baylor the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on what appeared to be a double play ball to junior shortstop Michael Constantini. Constantini flipped the ball to sophomore second baseman Billy Fleming, who was unable to make an accurate throw to first base, allowing Porter to reach safely and Nathan Orf to score from third base.

Baylor sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, but only managed two runs to extend the lead to 4-0. An unlucky single that deflected off WVU junior starter Corey Walter scored Lawton Langford from second for the first run of the inning. Waco native and WVU righty reliever, junior Corey Holmes, came on in relief of Walter and hit Logan Brown with the bases loaded to score Baylor’s fourth run of the game. Holmes induced a ground out by Cal Towey to get out of the bases loaded jam and minimize the damage.

The Bears added one run in the seventh inning and three in the eighth inning, bringing the score to 8-0. Porter notched his third RBI of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly to right field in the eighth inning.

Walter (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings. Walter struck out one and walked four batters. Holmes gave up one run with two strikeouts and two walks in two innings of work. Jared Hill, Zach Bargeron, Taylor Munden and Brock Dykxhoorn all saw action following Holmes.

Baylor starter Max Garner (2-3) allowed seven hits in six innings to earn a combined shutout with reliever Crayton Bare. Bare was near perfect in three innings, allowing one hit and striking out six with one walk.

Langford and Jake Miller each had three hits to pace the Bears, while Porter had two hits, three RBIs and one run.

The rubber match is set for Sunday at 2:05 EST. The game can be heard on the affiliates of the Mountaineers Sports Network (WAJR 1440 AM in Morgantown). Links to live video, audio and stats of the games can be accessed at WVUsports.com.
