MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team scored three first-half goals in a 3-0 shutout against Duquesne Sunday afternoon at the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

“It was good to finally get outside and compete,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We had to deal with the wind, but I was really pleased with our effort from the opening whistle. It was a good overall effort as this was our first time outside against other competition.”

In the 18th minute, forward France Silva beat a defender to the inside of the box and drove a ball on ground past the Dukes’ goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Silva netted a second goal on a breakaway. The junior slotted a ball under the diving goalkeeper for 2-0 lead.

Forward Kate Schwindel nearly got on the scoreboard in the 35th minute when sending a ball just left of post on a through ball from forward Kelsie Maloney.

Freshman defender Carly Black, playing in her first action as a Mountaineer since injuring her knee last fall in preseason, drove a header into the back of the net on WVU’s third corner kick of the match to make it a 3-0 game. The corner kick opportunity was set up on a Kara Blosser shot that was denied on a diving save.

“It was great to see Caroline (Szwed) and Carly out there battling,” said Izzo-Brown. “Both were very effective today, and it’s easy to see how much we missed them last fall.”

Szwed, who played well and started the match in midfield, was limited in playing time since coming off knee surgery and missing the 2012 season.

WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane worked a scoreless first half, before making way for Katie Osterman to work the final 45 minutes in net.

Eighteen Mountaineers saw action on the afternoon, as WVU compiled a 14-1 edge on corner kicks.

WVU returns to action against Pitt and Ohio State on April 13 in Pittsburgh at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Mountaineers will meet the Panthers at 11 a.m. and will face the Buckeyes at noon.
