Shelar Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s track athlete Katlyn Shelar has been named Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Ohio Team Challenge this past weekend.

After redshirting indoor season, Shelar broke the school record in the pole vault with a mark of 4.08 meters in her first-place showing. Shelar takes over the school record from Erin Nett who had held it since 2002 with a mark of 4.00 meters.

The Novi, Mich., native becomes the fourth track athlete to break a school record this season. Shelar is currently ranked No. 4 in the Big 12, No. 10 in the NCAA East region and No. 22 nationally in pole vault.

Baseball
-This Week in Baseball
The WVU baseball team will play five games this week … on Tuesday the Mountaineers travel to Ohio State for a 6:35 p.m. start, before returning home to host Youngstown State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. … WVU has a bye in the conference schedule this week and will travel to Liberty this weekend (April 12-14) … Friday’s game begins at 7 p.m., Saturday’s game starts at 4 p.m. and Sunday’s finale is set for 2 p.m.

-Last Week in Baseball
The Mountaineers went 2-2 last week, defeating Marshall on Tuesday, before dropping a Big 12 series at Baylor over the weekend … WVU defeated Marshall, 10-2, to even the season series at 1-1 … at Baylor, WVU won the first game 9-8, before falling 8-0 in game two and 11-1 in game three.

Senior catcher Alan Filauro continued to swing a hot bat, going 6-for-11 (.545) during the week with five runs, two doubles, two home runs and five RBIs … junior third baseman Ryan Tuntland also had a strong week, going 7-for-13 (.538), while junior first baseman Ryan McBroom batted .467 (7-for-15) with four runs, one homer and three RBIs … sophomore lefty Harrison Musgrave earned a no-decision on Friday night, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of action … Musgrave walked four and struck out three.

Track and Field

The West Virginia University track and field team travels to the Patriot Open Invitational hosted by George Mason in Fairfax, Va., on Saturday, April 13, with events starting at noon.

The Mountaineers split up between the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala., and the Ohio Team Challenge and Sunset Classic in Athens, Ohio.

At the Ohio Team Challenge and Sunset Classic, junior Katlyn Shelar broke the school record in the pole vault with a mark of 4.08 meters … Shelar placed first in the event with a personal-best mark and takes over the school record from Erin Nett who had held it since 2002 with a mark of 4.00 meters … senior Heather Adams won both discus and hammer throw for the second meet in a row with marks of 43.88 meters and 50.47 meters, respectively … the 4x400-meter relay team of Christ D’Egidio, Ashanti Bess, Arielle Gaither and Shakiyla Cosby placed first with a season-best time of 3:53.41 … at the Tiger Track Classic, Chene Townsend led the way with a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.75 … Sydney Cummings placed fifth in the invitational heat of the high jump with a leap of 1.77 meters, while Hannah Stone took fifth in the unseeded heat with a leap of 1.67 meters … junior Stormy Nesbit also competed at Auburn and placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 12.11 meters.

Tennis
-This Week in Women’s Tennis
WVU (4-13, 0-6 Big 12) travels to Ames, Iowa, to take on Iowa State (7-12, 0-6 Big 12) on Sunday, April 14, at 9:30 a.m.

-Last Week in Women’s Tennis
The Mountaineers were defeated by No. 31 Oklahoma State, 7-0, on Friday and Oklahoma, 7-0, on Sunday … Sunday’s match was the team’s final home match of the year.

WVU scored one victory in this past weekend’s action … Audrey Wooland and Emily Mathis, who were competing in their last home matches of their career, were victorious in doubles play on Friday … the victory was the combo’s team-leading ninth doubles win of the season … four players (Mathis, Hailey Barrett, Ikttesh Chahal, Vivian Tsui) share the team lead in singles victories, with six apiece …Sunday’s meeting against the Cyclones will be the second time that the programs have meet … in 2009, Iowa State defeated the Mountaineers, 6-1, at the Nebraska Tournament in Lincoln, Neb.

The West Virginia University rowing team heads to Cherry Hill, N.J., to compete at the Knecht Cup Regatta, on April 13-14.

The Mountaineers traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala., and competed in a dual regatta against Alabama and UCF on the Black Warrior River, on April 6.

The varsity 8+ crew of Rachelle Purych, Lisa Deklau, Kelly Kramer, Danielle Widecrantz, Elizabeth Kantak, Jessica Hurlbert, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand, and coxswain Mallory Fisher paced the Mountaineers with a first-place finish (7:41.5) over UCF (7:43.2) and Alabama (7:52.1) … WVU’s second varsity 8+ crew of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Hilary Meale, Mary Ignatiadis, Mollie Rosen, Tamyra Roberts, Jeannine McCarty, Elizabeth Duarte, and coxswain Morgan Leach trailed behind the Golden Knights (7:48.4) and the Crimson Tide (7:50.4) for a third-place finish with a time of 7:57.6 … Alabama took the top finishes in both the varsity and second varsity 4+ races, with WVU finishing in third (9:13.9) and second (9:10.4), respectively.

Gymnastics

The Mountaineers (13-9, 1-3) have concluded their 2013 season.

The Mountaineers scored 194.475 and finished fifth at the 2013 NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships on April 6, at the WVU Coliseum … the team scored 49.025 on vault, 48.475 on bars, 48.45 on beam and 48.525 on floor … senior Kaylyn Millick tallied 39.0 and finished ninth overall … she paced the team on bars with a 9.825 score … senior Alaska Richardson scored 9.875 on floor and tied for second place, while sophomore Beth Deal tallied 9.825 on beam and finished tied for fifth … Richardson and freshman Jaida Lawrence paced WVU on vault with 9.825 marks.

No. 5-ranked Michigan, the region’s top seed, finished first with a 196.725 score, while No. 17-ranked Illinois, the No. 3 seed, scored 196.025 and finished second … both teams earned the right to move on to the NCAA National Championships, set for April 19-21, in Los Angeles … No. 8-ranked Nebraska, the Big Ten champions and the region’s No. 2 seed, finished third (195.875), No. 19-ranked Kentucky placed fourth (195.575) and North Carolina placed sixth (194.35) … senior Chelsea Goldschrafe matched her season high on vault with a 9.8 … Saturday’s competition was the final career meet for Goldschrafe, Millick and Richardson.
