With more than half of this year’s spring football drills now in the books, West Virginia University coach Dana Holgorsen has unveiled his first two-deep of the spring (see attachment link above).
However, “tentative” is the word Holgorsen used to describe the depth chart he has released.
“The depth chart could change on a day-to-day basis,” he said following Thursday evening’s practice. “Whoever we line up as first team offense and first team defense is what you will see on that sheet.”
Junior Paul Millard
, freshman Ford Childress
and true freshman Chavas Rawlins
are each listed as “or” on the two-deep for the quarterback position, demonstrating again that Holgorsen and his offensive staff are no closer to naming a starter there than they were at the beginning of the spring.
As for the other offensive skill spots, junior Andrew Buie
is listed No. 1 at running back, sophomore Cody Clay
is the top H-back and the top three wide receiver spots include sophomore KJ Myers
at X, junior Connor Arlia
at Y and junior college transfer Kevin White
at Z. The No. 1 O-line right now is made up of junior Quinton Spain
at left tackle, sophomore Marquis Lucas
at left guard, senior Pat Eger
at center, junior Mark Glowinski
at right guard and senior Curtis Feigt
at right tackle.
“(This) could change on Saturday morning, on Tuesday, or for the spring game,” noted Holgorsen.
Defensively, the top three up front include senior Will Clarke
at defensive tackle, senior Shaq Rowell
at nose, and sophomore Kyle Rose
at defensive end.
The four linebacker spots are led by junior Wes Tonkery
at spur, sophomore Isaiah Bruce
at sam, sophomore Nick Kwiatkoski
at will and senior Dozie Ezemma
The No. 1s in the back end include senior Brodrick Jenkins
and sophomore Nana Kyeremeh
at corners, senior Darwin Cook
at bandit safety and sophomore Karl Joseph
at free safety.
"I figured I would make it a little easier for our media relations department," said Holgorsen as for why he released a two-deep now. "They needed something for the spring game that will serve as a tentative depth chart. If nothing else, you can see who is playing what position. In the fall, we will add another 20 guys that we expect to come in and compete for playing time."
Holgorsen indicated that there is a lot of evaluating left to do ahead of the spring game coming up on April 20.
“We have four practices left,” he said. “Saturday will be a heavy, heavy practice. We haven’t had a full scrimmage yet, and we won’t have one until Tuesday. We have had mini-scrimmages at the end of practice and those have gone well. We have been focusing more on fundamentals and teaching.
“We are running a lot of team reps,” Holgorsen continued. “We will run mini-scrimmages again on Saturday, and then on Tuesday we will have our biggest scrimmage of the spring. Thursday is non-padded, so we can’t do a whole lot that day, and then we have the spring game on Saturday.
