MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Nathan Pennesi
was honored as the West Virginia University wrestling team’s George Nedeff Outstanding Wrestler Award recipient at the team’s annual year-end senior awards banquet held at the Erickson Alumni Center on Sunday.
Pennesi, who was the lone Mountaineer grappler to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Championships, led the team in victories (22), dual meet wins (8), bonus point wins (7) and victories against top 20 opponents (2). During the season, Pennesi ranked as high as No. 12 in the country.
In addition to being named the team’s outstanding wrestler, Pennesi garnered the Coaches’ Award from coach Craig Turnbull for the second consecutive season.
Also honored at the banquet was the team’s Rookie of the Year, freshman Bubba Scheffel
. The Oakland, Md., who transferred to WVU from Virginia Tech, posted a 12-7 overall record in his rookie campaign and was ranked as high as No. 20 this season.
Pennesi, Scheffel and Shane Young
were chosen as team’s captains, which are selected at the end of the season by a team vote.
The final group honored at the banquet was the team’s seniors, which consisted of Young, Jeffrey Yeatman
, Michael Bolash
, Lance Bryson
and Phil Mandzik
