MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team takes to the road this weekend, as it travels to Ames, Iowa, to take on Iowa State on Sunday, April 14, at 9:30 a.m.

The Cyclones enter Sunday’s tilt with a 7-12, 0-6 Big 12 record, while the Mountaineers hold a 4-13, 0-6 Big 12 record and are looking to snap a six-match losing streak.

“Something is going to have to give this weekend, with either us or Iowa State winning our first Big 12 match of the season,” says coach Tina Samara. “In order to get a victory, we will need to get off to a better start than we have in the past few matches. For some reason, we have been slow starters this year, and we have seen that you can’t get behind on these types of teams.”

In action last weekend, Iowa State was defeated by then-No. 34 Oklahoma, 4-3, and then-No. 31 Oklahoma State, 6-1.

WVU also took on the Cowgirls and the Sooners last weekend, by whom it was defeated by a score of 7-0 in each match.

“In order to avoid the slow starts that we have been having, we have to come out aggressive from the first serve of doubles play,” Samara says. “We don’t need to hit our best shots to keep ourselves in the match; we just need to limit our mistakes and unforced errors. When we have done that this year, we have shown that we can compete against top-ranked teams.”

Heading into action this weekend, four players, Hailey Barrett, Ikttesh Chahal, Vivian Tsui and Emily Mathis, are tied for the team lead in singles victories, with six.

In doubles play, Audrey Wooland and her doubles partner, Mathis, hold the team lead with nine victories.

Overall, Mathis leads the Mountaineers with 15 combined victories this season.

Sunday’s meeting against the Cyclones will be the second time that the two programs have met. In 2009, Iowa State defeated the Mountaineers, 6-1, at the Nebraska Tournament in Lincoln, Neb.

A full recap of Sunday’s action will be available on WVUsports.com following the completion of competition.
