Track Records Three First-Place Finishes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three first place finishes paced the West Virginia University track and field team at the Patriot Open Invitational on Saturday in Fairfax, Va.

After breaking the school record last weekend, Katlyn Shelar recorded her second first-place finish in a row in the pole vault with a mark of 3.82 meters. Heather Adams won the hammer throw for the third meet in a row with a mark of 53.44 meters, while Stormy Nesbit took the long jump title with a leap of 5.86 meters.

WVU also had three Mountaineers finish with personal-best marks, with Karissa Knabenshue leading the way in the shot put with a mark of 13.16 meters for a sixth-place finish. Knabenshue’s mark is now second all-time in program history in shot put.

Kiley Defibaugh also posted a personal-best mark by placing fifth in the pole vault after clearing 3.60 meters, while Alanna Pritts placed 15th in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 40.97 meters.

After coming in fourth in the prelims with a time of 14.28, Chene Townsend improved her time in the finals to 14.05 for a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Sarah Martinelli and Jordan Hamric led the distance team with top 20 finishes in the 1,500-meter run. Martinelli placed 10th with a time of 4:28.45, while Hamric came in 16th place with a time of 4:35.44.

The Mountaineers continue action in outdoor season by traveling to the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J., on April 19-20.
