MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team was defeated by Iowa State, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Ames Racquet and Fitness in Ames, Iowa.

With the win, the Cyclones (8-12, 1-6 Big 12) notched their first Big 12 victory of the season, while the Mountaineers dropped to 4-14, 0-7 Big 12.

The match, which began with singles play instead of the usual doubles play format, saw Iowa State and WVU come out evenly matched, as the two teams split the first four singles matches.

Hailey Barrett and Emily Mathis each earned their team-leading seventh singles win of the season, as they won at No. 2 singles and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Barrett was a 6-1, 6-4 victor over Ksenia Pronina, while Mathis defeated Jenna Langhorst, 6-4, 7-5.

After the Cyclones’ Emma Waites defeated Irinka Toidze to set the score at 3-2 in favor of Iowa State, it came down to the No. 3 singles match pitting the Mountaineers’ Ikttesh Chahal versus Meghan Cassens.

Cassens was able to win the opening set, 6-1, but Chahal rallied to take the second set, 6-2. In the third and deciding set, Cassens earned a 6-4 victory, which sealed up her win as well as the team victory.

In doubles play, Iowa State swept WVU with wins of 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, 8-6 at No. 2 doubles and 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
