LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Dan Dierdorff pitched brilliantly, giving the WVU baseball team a 2-1 victory and series win against Liberty on Sunday afternoon at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

"Baseball is not like the other sports, one guy can completely control the game and he did that today," coach Randy Mazey says.

The right-hander pitched a complete game, improving his record to 2-4. Dierdorff allowed one run, none earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

"We got off to a slow start, I couldn't locate my offspeed pitches and my fastball was up," Dierdorff says. "Luckily as the game went on I got a good feel for the pitches and got into a good groove."

WVU finished with four hits, improving its overall record to 20-17, while Liberty registered five hits and now has a 19-18 record.

Liberty starter Trey Lambert was equally as effective, letting up two runs on five hits in a complete game effort. Lambert struck out two with two walks.

Sophomore shortstop Taylor Munden and sophomore center fielder Bobby Boyd put the Mountaineers ahead 2-0 in the top of the first. Munden led off with a single to center field and then advanced to third on a successful hit and run by Boyd through the left side, with Boyd moving to second on the throw. Senior right fielder Brady Wilson and junior third baseman Ryan Tuntland drove in Munden and Boyd, respectively, with back-to-back ground outs.

Liberty cut the lead in half in the fifth inning with Bryan Aanderud scoring on a groundout to shortstop by Trey Wimmer. Aanderud hit a double to center field and moved to third on a passed ball prior to scoring.

WVU returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game against Morehead State at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston. A link to live stats is available on WVUsports.com.
