Women’s Tennis Falls to Jayhawks
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team was defeated by Kansas, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kan.
The Mountaineers, who forfeited the No. 3 doubles match and No. 6 singles match, began the match at a 1-0 deficit.
In doubles play, the Jayhawks earned the doubles point on the strength of a victory by Dylan Windom, and Maria Jose Cardona at No. 2 doubles.
"We didn't have the type of intensity that we needed from the start of doubles play," Samara said. "If we get that intensity, we give ourselves a chance to win the doubles point."
WVU avoided the sweep in doubles play, however, as Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal earned an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.
"Hailey and Ikttesh did a better job in doubles," Samara said. "In order to keep improving, they will need to work on staying focused when they are holding a lead."
In singles play, KU earned victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, which gave it a 4-0 lead and the team victory.
Following their lockup of the team victory, the Jayhawks notched victories at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to stretch their lead to 6-0.
Vivian Tsui was able to help the Mountaineers avoid the shutout, as she was able to score the team’s lone singles victory, as she defeated Windom, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. The victory was Tsui's first at No. 4 singles and seventh overall of the season, which ties her for the team lead in singles victories.
"Vivian had a slow start then turned on the intensity that we needed from her in the second and third set," Samara said. "Irinka (Toidze) also fought hard in her match. Her two-set match lasted nearly as long as Vivian's three-set match."
With the victory, Kansas improves to 9-9, 1-7 Big 12, while WVU drops to 4-15, 0-8 Big 12.
The Mountaineers close out their regular season on Sunday, as they travel to Manhattan, Kan., to take on No. 52 Kansas State.
