MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Second half goals from Kelsie Maloney and Kate Schwindel guided the West Virginia women’s soccer team to a 2-2 draw against visiting Maryland Saturday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

“It was good to get out on the field and compete,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We played some good soccer, particularly in the second half. We’ll look at the film and see where we can improve before closing out the spring season next week.”

Terrapin forward Alexis Prior-Brown gave Maryland an early 1-0 lead on a goal in only the fifth minute. Prior-Brown slipped behind Mountaineer back line and slotted a ball across the ground and inside the back post.

Schwindel made a pair of long runs late in the opening half, taking the ball up the right side and placing two shots high of the crossbar.

Trailing 1-0 after 56 minutes, Maloney tied the match with a header in front of the net. The Mountaineers held possession from a throw-in, deep in the right corner, as forward France Silva played a ball to Schwindel at the end line. Schwindel’s one-timer found Maloney in the heart of the box who directed the ball past goalkeeper Kristene Mumby.

Maryland regained the lead in the 66th minute on a penalty kick. Ashley Spivey converted the free kick after a teammate was taken down inside the top of the box.

West Virginia tied the match at 2-2 in the 73rd minute on a goal from Schwindel. Schwindel drove a ball at the goal from the right side, deflecting off a Maryland defender and into the back of the net.

The Mountaineer defense held Maryland to only one corner kick, while the WVU offense generated four corner kick opportunities.

The spring booking concludes with a home match versus Kent State on April 27. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
