MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three first-place finishes in the field events paced the West Virginia University track and field team on the final day of the Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday in Princeton, N.J.

Katlyn Shelar broke her own school record that she set two weeks ago by winning the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 4.10 meters. Sydney Cummings placed first in the high jump with a leap of 1.76 meters, while Stormy Nesbit claimed the long jump title with a mark of 12.59 meters.

“It was nice to see this group take advantage of the strong competition this weekend,” coach Sean Cleary says. “We are very excited with the consistency that many of our top kids are demonstrating. Katlyn Shelar, Story Nesbit, Sydney Cummings, Chene Townsend, Heather Adams and Sarah Martinelli are all starting to come around at the right time. Another weekend and another program best in the pole vault should have Shelar very confident heading into the championship portion of our schedule.”

Townsend was the other Mountaineer with a top-5 finish after coming in fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.47. The 4x400-meter relay team of Ashanti Bess, Shakiyla Cosby, Arielle Gaither and Christa D’Egidio also placed top 5 after placing fifth with a time of 3:54.16.

WVU also had four athletes post personal-best marks at Weaver Stadium. Cosby placed 14th with a personal-best time of 58.04 in the 400-meter dash, while D’Egidio and Gaither also recorded personal-best times in the 800-meter run (2:16.47) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.13), respectively. Alison Kimble was the final Mountaineer to record a personal-best time with a 19th-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:33.57.

The Mountaineers will split up next weekend with half of the team headed to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 25-27, while the other half of the team will compete at the Ashland Alumni Open in Ashland, Ohio on April 26-27.
