MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After closing out its regular season this past Sunday, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team turns its attention to the Big 12 Championships, as it takes on seventh-seeded Kansas State on Thursday, April 25, at 11 a.m., at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.
Kansas State completed the regular season with a 9-10, 3-6 Big 12 record and features one ranked singles player (No. 14 Petra Niedermayerova) and two ranked doubles combos (No. 26 Karla Bonacic/Niedermayerova and No. 50 Ivana Kubickova/Niedermayerova)
“With a year of Big 12 Conference play under our belts, we have seen what we need to do to be successful in this league,” said coach Tina Samara. “It starts with competing with teams of this caliber. Kansas State’s record doesn’t really reflect how strong of a team it is. We have competed against 12 top-70 opponents this season, and it isn’t going to get any easier now.”
The Wildcats present themselves as a familiar foe to the Mountaineers, as the two teams squared off in last Sunday’s regular season finale, with Kansas State blanking WVU, 7-0.
The win for the Wildcats included five singles wins and two doubles victories, as the Mountaineers were playing one player short and forfeited at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
“We were at a disadvantage playing one player short, but we had chances to take victories at certain spots,” Samara said. “We had way too many unforced errors, which has been one of our critical issues this season. We have routinely missed first serves, returns and double faulted.”
WVU, which is in search of its first Big 12 victory, is led by Hailey Barrett
, Ikttesh Chahal
and Vivian Tsui
Chahal and Tsui are tied for the team lead with Emily Mathis
, with seven singles victories.
In addition, Mathis has team-leading totals of nine doubles victories and 16 combined victories.
The winner of Thursday’s contest is slated to take on second-seeded Texas Tech on Friday, April 26, at 3 p.m.
