MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Alan Filauro
of the WVU baseball team has been added to the official watch list for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award, presented by BaseballSavings.com, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced. The award honors the nation’s top catcher in Division I college baseball.
Filauro has appeared in 43 games with 39 starts behind the plate for the Mountaineers this season. He has thrown out 6-of-15 base stealers; additionally he has picked off one runner.
At the plate, the senior is batting .275 with five doubles, four home runs and 19 RBIs, compiling a .405 slugging percentage.
Filauro was one of 10 catchers across the nation added and joins Big 12 counterparts Blair DeBord (Kansas State), Ka’iana Eldredge (Kansas), Jacob Felts (Texas) and Victor Romero (Oklahoma State).
The watch list for the Bench Award will be updated to include other candidates through May 6 and will then be narrowed down to the semifinalists on May 16, 2013. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced on June 4.
A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27, 2013.
