MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With a personal-best throw of 56.96 meters, senior Heather Adams
broke the school record in the hammer throw Friday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Waco, Texas.
Adams finished fifth in the competition and scored four points for the Mountaineers – the team’s first points in the three day meet.
“We got off to a very good start with Heather’s school record on the hammer throw,” coach Sean Cleary says. “She has worked so hard this year for this moment and this is an exciting memory for her.”
Also scoring for the Mountaineers at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex was junior Katlyn Shelar
, who finished eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.76 meters.
“Katlyn looked a little off out there tonight,” Cleary says. “It is a testament as to how far she has come in that she can be a little off and still score in this league. We fully expect her to be at peak strength by the NCAA meet." Hallie Portner
was the only runner on the track tonight for WVU. Portner finished 12th in the 10,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 36:51.24.
Day two of the meet will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. Live results for the championships can be found at deltatiming.com, with final results and recap available on WVUsports.com after the completion of the competition.
