MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman rower Elizabeth Kantak
has been named the Big 12 Conference’s Newcomer of the Year.
Competing in its first Big 12 Championship, Kantak helped WVU’s first Varsity 8+ crew cross the finish line in 6:34.34 in third place, a spot higher than its seed of fourth, behind Oklahoma and Texas. The Atlanta native was a member of the same crew which won Big 12 Boat of the Week accolades for the week of April 10.

Kantak is the third Big 12 Conference major award winner for the Mountaineers, as women’s soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown garnered Big 12 Coach of the Year honors and women’s soccer defender Bry McCarthy was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Oklahoma’s Nicole Furmanek and Leeanne Crain earned Big 12 Rower of the Year and Big 12 Coach of the Year, respectively, while Kansas’ Liz Scherer earned Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
