WVU Falls to Marshall in Rubber Match

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team fell 6-5 to Marshall in front of 2,103 fans on Tuesday evening at Linda K. Epling Stadium.

The Mountaineers (30-23) dropped the season series against the Thundering Herd (20-31) after splitting the first two games earlier in the season.

Marshall tied the game and took the 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out two-run double by Alfredo Brito off the right field wall to score Isaac Ballou and Gray Stafford.

Ballou led all batters with three hits, three runs and two doubles, while Nathan Gomez, Eric Escobedo and Brito each recorded two hits and two RBIs for the Thundering Herd.

West Virginia was led offensively by sophomore second baseman Billy Fleming and redshirt senior right fielder Chris Rasky with two hits apiece.

A pair of two-out RBI singles by West Virginia and Marshall allowed each team to score one run in the first inning. Redshirt junior designated hitter Matt Frazer scored junior third baseman Ryan Tuntland from second base to give WVU an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, while Marshall’s Nathan Gomez scored Ballou.

Junior center fielder Kevin Cohen drew a bases loaded hit by pitch to put WVU ahead 2-1 in the top of the second, followed by a double off the left field wall by Fleming, extending the Mountaineers lead to 4-1.

Ballou scored another run in the third inning, while Gomez scored on an Escobedo single in the fifth inning, cutting the Mountaineer lead to 4-3.

Rasky gave WVU an insurance run and a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning with a two-out double to right center field, scoring junior first baseman Ryan McBroom from second base.

Freshman right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn (2-1) made his first start in two weeks and allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings for the Mountaineers. Junior right-hander Josh Harlow (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings to take the loss.

Marshall starter Alex Thackston (1-3) gave up four runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout in 1.0 inning. Ryan Hopkins (4-2) earned the victory for Marshall in 0.1 innings, while Josh King picked up his sixth save of the season.

The Mountaineers will close out the regular season this weekend against Big 12 foe Oklahoma State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. Thursday’s opener will begin at 7:30 p.m., Friday’s game is set for 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s finale will be at 4 p.m. Friday’s matchup will be televised by Fox College Sports.

All three games can be heard on the affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network with the Morgantown affiliate WAJR 1440 AM serving as the flagship station.
