Four Mountaineers Earn Academic Honor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four West Virginia University student-athletes were named to the women’s and men’s 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 2 At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Senior Petra Zublasing and sophomore Jenelle Zee were named to the women’s team, while sophomores Thomas Kyanko and David Palley were named to the men’s team.

The honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballots, where first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America selections will be named in the coming weeks.

Zublasing, a member of the 2013 WVU NCAA champion rifle team, will graduate this weekend from the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources (civil engineering) boasting a 3.84 grade point average (GPA). The all-district honor is the second consecutive for the Appiano, Italy, native, and she was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Second Team.

A three-time national champion, Zublasing won the 2013 NCAA air rifle and smallbore national championships, becoming the first student-athlete since 2001 to win both titles at one championship. She also won the 2012 NCAA air rifle title. The College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) 2013 NCAA Shooter of the Match, Zublasing ended her career as a five-time National Rifle Association (NRA) First Team All-American. She also led the Mountaineers to their fourth straight Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship, won the GARC smallbore and combined score titles and was named the conference’s shooter and senior of the year. Additionally, she shot a school-record 595 smallbore and 1193 combined score this season.

Zublasing, a 2012 Olympian, was one of 34 seniors to earn the WVU Foundation Outstanding Senior Award, and one of eight students honored with the University’s most prestigious student honor – the Order of Augusta.

Zee, a member of the WVU women’s swimming team, is a pre-criminology major and owns a 4.0 GPA. A native of Long Valley, N.J., she finished fourth in the 100 breast at the 2013 Big 12 Championships with a school-record time of 1:01.76. Zee also finished 10th in the 100 breast at the championships and was a member of the second-place 200 medley relay and third-place 400 medley relay. A 2013 Big 12 All-Academic First Team member, Zee was one of three student-athletes named to the conference squad with a 4.0 GPA.
Kyanko, a member of the 2013 WVU NCAA champion rifle team, is working toward a computer science degree and boasts a 3.9 GPA. A Wellsburg, W.Va., native, Kyanko competed as an individual qualifier in smallbore at the national championships and finished seventh. A two-time NRA Second Team All-American, he also finished fourth in smallbore at the GARC Championships. Additionally, Kyanko has represented WVU the last two seasons as the GARC Scholar-Athlete.

Palley, a member of the WVU men’s swimming team, is a civil engineering major and owns a 4.0 GPA. A backstroke specialist and a consistent member of the WVU medley relay teams, the Walnut Creek, Calif., native finished ninth in the 200 back and 10th in the 100 back at the 2013 Big 12 Championships. He was one of three student-athletes named to the 2013 Big 12 All-Academic First Team with a 4.0 GPA.
