MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University rowing team had eight rowers named 2013 Collegiate Coaches Rowing Association National Scholar Athletes.

The group is comprised of Elizabeth Duarte, Kelly Kramer, Morgan Leach, Hilary Meale, Rachelle Purych, Bethany Anne Sapen, Courtney Schrand and Karen Verwey.

"High academic and athletic standards must be met to be named a CRCA Scholar Athlete,” said coach Jimmy King. “I commend these student-athletes for their accomplishments on the water and in the classroom, and I thank them for the manner in which they wonderfully represent our rowing program."

This year’s eight CRCA Scholar Athletes are the most in program history, with the previous high of six coming last year for the Mountaineers.

In order to be eligible, student-athletes must meet four criteria.

Student-athletes must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, be in her second, third, or fourth year of eligibility, rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event and has had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year). Additionally, the head coach of the student-athletes’ institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2013.
