MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball coach Jill Kramer has announced the addition of Kevin Carroll as assistant coach on the Mountaineer volleyball staff.

“I was looking for some specific characteristics for this position and Kevin embodies those,” Kramer says. “He brings a fresh, energetic vibe in the gym and also comes from a winning and successful program. He won a national championship as both a player and a coach and will have a lot to share with our team from those experiences. I think that he brings something different to the table coming from the men’s game and some different concepts that he can really share and help us grow with.

“He comes highly recommended from some great minds in volleyball. The things I am really looking forward to are what he can bring to the gym, what he can bring to our scouting and a new take on recruiting.”

Carroll joins the Mountaineers from his alma mater, UC Irvine, where he played for the Anteaters from 2008-12 and was a member of UCI’s National Championship teams in 2009 and 2012. This past season as the statistician and in charge of scouting for the Anteaters, Carroll was a part of the staff that led UCI to its fourth national title in the last seven years.

The Los Alamitos, Calif., native becomes the third assistant coach in the Big 12 to earn a Division I national title as a player and coach, along with Salima Rockwell and Erik Sullivan from Texas.

During his tenure as a player and coach, UCI was 112-44 (.718) overall and won the MPSF Championships in 2012. He recorded 516 kills in his collegiate career, including a career-best 29 kills versus Penn State in 2010.
Carroll also coached at the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club and Orange County Volleyball Club for the last three years in Southern California.

“I am really excited and this is a fun opportunity, a good experience and challenge for me coming from the men’s game to the women’s game,” Carroll says. “Challenges are what I want and what I thrive on. I love volleyball and it is great that Jill is going to allow me to scout and do what I want to do. WVU volleyball has a good atmosphere and there is a great culture on the team. From what I have heard, the girls work extremely hard and they are going to be really fun to work with.”

As a prep at Los Alamitos High, Carroll was honored as All-CIF First Team, Mizuno Volleyball Magazine All-America and Fab 50, as well as the Press Telegram Dream Team Player of the Year in 2007. He also earned All-Orange County First Team honors, was MVP of the Orange County All-Star match and earned Press Telegram Dream Team distinction two other years.

Carroll was a member of the USA Men’s Junior National team in 2006 and 2007 that traveled to Mexico and Morrocco to play in the NORCECA tournament and Junior World Championships. He also earned a bronze medal and was named to the all-tournament team with the Riptides Volleyball Club at the 2005 and 2006 Junior Olympics.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from UCI in 2012.

What others are saying about Kevin Carroll…

“What Kevin lacks in experience, he makes up for in knowledge of the game. He has a great eye for the game and a great eye for scouting. He is one of the best young coaches that I have been around when it comes to communicating the game and communicating what he is teaching. He also is a tremendous teacher and I think he is going to be a diligent worker and dedicated to make sure the program goes in the direction it needs to as the program continues into the Big 12 and gets used to the level of play.”
Kevin Hambley- Women’s volleyball head coach at Illinois and runner-up at the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship

“Kevin is such a great person. He is a hard worker and a great player to have in the gym. West Virginia is lucky to have gained him as an assistant coach.”
Paula Weishoff- Women’s volleyball head coach at UC Irvine, former assistant coach for USA Women’s National team and three-time Olympian

“Over the course of this last year, Kevin has developed a mastery for evaluating opponents by utilizing his intuitive and trained feel for the game with objective data that he spent countless hours compiling. He was our point person for every game plan during the 2013 National Championship campaign. He is also one of the more genuine, humble and competitive people I have met. He will be missed, but his fingerprints will be all over our future success as he has raised the bar of what it means to be an assistant coach. I will be following his career with great interest.”
David Kniffin- Men’s volleyball head coach at UC Irvine and three-time NCAA Division 1 men’s volleyball national champion

“I am excited for Kevin and I am excited for West Virginia. Right from when I first met Kevin, I knew that he loved volleyball and he was all about the sport. He was always a very intelligent player who worked incredibly hard. I really enjoyed working with him and I think he is going to become a great coach because he has a true passion for the sport. He has played at a really high level and understands high level volleyball. He will be able to relay all of the lessons he has learned as a player to now his coaching career and the players that he will teach.”
John Speraw- Men’s volleyball head coach at UCLA, former head coach at UC Irvine, head coach for USA Men’s National team and three-time NCAA Division I men’s volleyball national champion
