MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s rowing team closed out the 2012-13 academic calendar with the highest grade point average (GPA) among all rowing programs in Conference USA, announced the conference office today.

The Mountaineers’ 3.417 team GPA is the highest mark earned by any program since C-USA began sponsoring women’s rowing in 2010.

“To be recognized as the top academic team among our rowing peers is a testament to the great overall work ethic of our students,” says coach Jimmy King. “The team honor also reflects the broad-based support we receive through Student Services at WVU that is key to our ongoing successes."

WVU rowers Rachelle Purych and Courtney Schrand were named to the 2013 C-USA All-Academic Team. Purych and Schrand both maintained a 3.97 GPA.

Alexandra Basil, Mary Ignatiadis, Danika Rencken and Karen Verwey joined Purych and Schrand in receiving the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal, which recognizes student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better. Twenty-four Mountaineers earned positions on C-USA’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

WVU had a program-high eight rowers named to the 2013 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s (CRCA) National Scholar Athletes list. The group comprised of Elizabeth Duarte, Kelly Kramer, Morgan Leach, Hilary Meale, Purych, Bethany Anne Sapen, Schrand and Verwey.

In addition to the Mountaineers’ recognition by the CRCA, 19 rowers received Academic All-Big 12 honors, including 15 first-team honors. Susannah Hartlove, Ignatiadis, Liz Kantak and Caroline Mullins also were named to the Big 12’s inaugural Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team.

C-USA recognizes the teams with the highest team cumulative GPA from the previous season. Ten schools were represented over the conference’s 18 supported sports.

The Mountaineers have been an affiliate of C-USA since beginning Big 12 competition in 2012-13. Due to C-USA’s automatic bid to compete at the NCAA Championships, several programs from the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference have joined the conference as affiliate members.
