Caridi to Continue to Call WVU Sports
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG announced today that Tony Caridi will return as chief announcer for the burgeoning new network.
Caridi will serve as radio play-by-play announcer for West Virginia University football and men’s basketball games and will host these sports’ respective coaches’ shows on the new sports network. Caridi will also host a television show to be developed covering WVU sports produced by the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG.
Under terms of Caridi’s agreement, he will continue to appear on “Northside Automotive Statewide Sportsline,” a popular radio show airing weeknights from 6 – 7 p.m.
Additional talent for the WVU broadcasts, including color commentary and sideline reporting, will be announced in the future.
“I’m excited to continue my relationship with the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG and the wonderful and passionate fans that love the Mountaineers,” Tony Caridi said. “It’s an honor and privilege to be associated with a network that’s always been respected as one of the nation’s best, particularly as coverage of Mountaineer sports now expands.”
Beloved by Mountaineers fans and acknowledged as the most recognizable sports voice in the state of West Virginia, Tony Caridi is a multiple winner of the state’s Sportscaster of the Year Award. Caridi began working with the former Mountaineer Sports Network in 1987 as a television play-by-play announcer and feature reporter. He assumed play-by-play duties for WVU’s sports network in 1997. Caridi is a native of Lockport, NY, and a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
West Virginia University and IMG College, which operates the nation’s largest independent sports radio network, recently formed a broad 12-year multimedia rights and sponsorship partnership including exclusive representation and management of game broadcasts and coaches’ shows on the new Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG beginning in the 2013-14 season. In a few short weeks, the network has already grown to 20 stations. More are expected to sign on.
“Following our recent agreement with WVU to carry Mountaineer sports, we had two immediate objectives: to quickly build our affiliate network, and bring Tony Caridi back to the booth calling Mountaineers sports,” said Joe Potter, Senior Vice President, Operations for IMG College. “Over the past several weeks, affiliate pick up has been extremely strong, and now we’re absolutely thrilled Tony has committed to our broadcasts.”
Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG plans to add four hours of pre- and post-game coverage for WVU football. Pregame shows will expand from one hour to 3.5 hours and postgame shows to two hours from 30 minutes.
