MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five West Virginia women’s soccer players have been named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Soccer Team, as selected by the league’s head coaches, conference officials announced today.
The program-best five Mountaineer selections were tops among the conference. WVU enters the 2013 campaign as the reigning Big 12 regular-season champions.
Seniors Kara Blosser
(midfielder) and Frances Silva
(forward), juniors Jess Crowder
(defender) and Kate Schwindel
(forward), and freshman Ashley Lawrence
(midfielder) landed on the preseason team. Lawrence, a Toronto, Ontario, native, is the lone rookie named to the conference squad.
Baylor, the Big 12 postseason champions, and Texas Tech each placed two players on the team, while Texas, TCU and Oklahoma State garnered one representative each. TTU junior Jaelene Hinkle is an unanimous selection, and ties in voting resulted in a 12-member team.
Conference coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players. The 2013 Big 12 preseason soccer poll will be announced tomorrow.
Led by 18th-year coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, WVU enters its second season in Big 12 play after capturing the conference’s regular-season crown with an unblemished 7-0-1 record. Schwindel earned All-Big 12 First Team honors, while Silva was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and Blosser landed on the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. Nine starters return from last season.
Preseason officially kicked off yesterday for the Mountaineers, and the team will play host to Rutgers in an exhibition at Dick Dlesk Soccer Field on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 1 p.m.
