MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University cross country coach Sean Cleary announced today the hiring of Erin O'Reilly as an assistant coach.
“It's very exciting to have Erin come back and join the staff here at West Virginia. She's clearly very familiar with the university and the athletic department,” says Cleary. “While she spent some time in Boston progressing her coaching career, she has always been a Mountaineer and our student-athletes will benefit greatly by having her on our staff.”
O'Reilly, a 1993 graduate of WVU, has spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant at Boston College. The Canton, Ohio native was a member of the WVU staff from 1994-2002. As a member of the staff at her alma mater, the Mountaineers registered 22 All-American honors and 13 All-Mid Atlantic region distinctions in cross country and track combined.
“I am overjoyed and extremely excited to return to what I consider my roots here in Morgantown,” says O’Reilly. “I gave 100 percent to WVU when I was here as a runner, and I’m looking forward to giving my all as a member of the Mountaineer staff.”
While under the direction of O'Reilly, Boston College recorded multiple Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) titles and numerous appearances at the NCAA Championships.
O’Reilly garnered many accolades as a runner at West Virginia, while serving as a team captain for cross country and track. O'Reilly finished third at the Atlantic 10 Championships as a junior and was named to the A-10 All-Conference Team. She was the ECAC champion and a NCAA provisional qualifier in the 1,000 meters her senior year. O'Reilly held seven school records in cross country and track by the end of career.
O'Reilly ran one year under coach Cleary in 1993, while Cleary served as the team's graduate assistant.
