Dear Mountaineer Fans:

As the West Virginia University Mountaineers embark on the second season of competition in the Big 12 Conference, I would like to thank the Mountaineer Nation for the friendliness and hospitality you demonstrated toward our guests and visiting fans last season.

Remember, last year was an opportunity to make a great first impression and to change some perceptions and stereotypes our Big 12 peers may have heard about our fans, our University and our beautiful state.

This outpouring of respect, friendliness and hospitality did not go unnoticed. Letters and emails from visiting teams and fans talked about how they were greeted, invited to tailgates and given directions. Here are a few heartfelt reactions:

Richard Bowersock, Oklahoma '01, wrote, ". . . we are still talking about how friendly and welcoming the entire campus felt." Grady Randle of Houston, a Baylor alum, was appreciative of "the great hospitality" that he experienced at WVU's inaugural Big 12 victory. Jarold and Barbara Boettcher, Kansas State, '62 and '63, marveled at the "utmost courtesy, friendship and generosity" of Mountaineer fans ... and the gratitude goes on.

I simply can't put into words how important last year was in making a good first impression with our new conference friends. And, now that we have such great momentum, it's time to treat our four new opponents, and their fans who are coming to Morgantown and Mountaineer Field for the first time -- Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech and Iowa State -- with that same warm West Virginia hospitality. I feel certain our fans will continue to receive a friendly welcome when they travel to other Big 12 campuses as well.

So, please continue to show our visiting guests that we proudly -- and loudly -- support our team, while welcoming them to our wonderful University and the great state of West Virginia. Every year, I want to show our guests what we have known all along – nobody is friendlier, more spirited and hospitable than West Virginians.

Let's Go Mountaineers!
