MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After earning a 1-0-1 mark at the Penn State Invitational last weekend, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team climbed to No. 10 in Soccer America’s Top 25, released today.

The Mountaineers (1-0-1) opened their 2013 campaign with a 2-2 draw at former-No. 2 Penn State (1-0-1) on Aug. 23. Senior forward Frances Silva gave WVU an early 1-0 lead after connecting on a cross from sophomore forward Kelsie Maloney in the fifth minute. Maloney extended the lead in the 70th minute on a header from freshman midfielder Ashley Lawrence.

The Nittany Lions netted two goals within 72 seconds in the 81st and 82nd minute, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie, marking the first draw in 11 meetings between the two programs.

The Mountaineers earned their first victory of the season against Syracuse (1-1) on Aug. 25. A cross from Silva found junior forward Kate Schwindel in the third minute for her 16th-career goal. Syracuse knotted the game in the 57th minute, but a ball from Silva misplayed by the Orange defense was knocked in, giving WVU the victory, 2-1.

Maloney was named to CollegeSoccer360.com’s Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll, also announced today, for her three-point performance against Penn State. The Harrisburg, Pa., native owns three career goals and leads the team, along with Silva, with three points this season.

WVU will open its home schedule at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30, against Central Michigan. Kick off is now scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday is a poster night, and all fans will be able to take home a free 2013 WVU women’s soccer schedule poster. The team will continue play on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m., when the Morehead State Eagles come to Morgantown.

Following the conclusion of the women’s game on Friday, the Mountaineer men’s soccer team will open its 2013 season against Central Connecticut State.
