MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team kicks off its 2013 season in Toledo, Ohio, for the Blue/Gold Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept 1.
“This is the first year that we've kicked the season off on the road in the past three seasons,” says coach Jill Kramer. “I think it's great for us to open on the road and be in a new environment.”
The Mountaineers will face Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 10 a.m., Loyola-Chicago on Saturday at 5 p.m., and Toledo on Sunday at 2 p.m.
West Virginia has a combined 10-4 all-time record against this weekend’s opponents.
“I'm really happy with our overall performance throughout preseason and the progress we have made as a group, both in our individual play and within our systems,” Kramer says. “Now it's time to measure where we are versus some other teams. This is such an exciting time of year.”
Kramer and the Mountaineers welcome five newcomers to a team that returns all of its starters plus its libero this season.
West Virginia returns its leading players from a year ago in every statistical category. Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Sackett
led the team with 267 kills last season, and sophomore setter Brittany Sample
led the Mountaineers with 960 assists.
“From the moment we stepped off the court in our final game last fall, this group has not stopped working,” Kramer says. “They are hungry to play a real match again and to keep building our program.”
The Mountaineers were 1-1 at neutral sites last season, and will return home next weekend to host the Mountaineer Invitational Sept. 6-7 at the WVU Coliseum.
