MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 29 West Virginia University cross country team began its 2013 season today at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., earning a fourth place finish out of 13 teams.

The invitational was held at Goodman Cross Country Course at Lehigh University. The course will also be the host of the NCAA Regionals later in the season.

“I was proud of this group today,” says coach Sean Cleary. “For a preseason effort off of very specific training efforts, I am pleased.”

Sophomore Paige Szabat was the first Mountaineer to cross the finish line, finishing in 10th place overall with a time of 23:41.75.

Junior Allison Pettit finished in 19th (23:50.51), junior Lydia Martinelli crossed the line in 29th (24:19.51), freshman Peyton Hampson in 32nd (24:31.55) and senior Chelsea Jarvis finished in 49th (25:12.03)

“We will return to this course in early October and should be significantly faster,” Cleary says.

West Virginia will return to action Friday, Sept. 13, at the PSU Spiked Shoe Invitational in State College, Pa.
