Sample Earns Athlete of the Week Honor
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 3, 2013) – West Virginia University volleyball’s Brittany Sample has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Blue/Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, this past weekend.
Sample led the Mountaineers to a 3-0 record and the Blue/Gold Invitational championship, while also being named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Sample anchored a West Virginia offense that posted a .423 hitting percentage against Toledo on Sunday, and a .258 team hitting percentage for the weekend.
The sophomore setter recorded 119 assists on the weekend, for an 11.90 assist per set average. Sample helped middle blocker Caleah Wells and outside hitters Jordan Anderson and Elzbieta Klein all set career highs for kills.
The Lewisville, Texas, native also helped Wells tally a .444 hit percentage, good for third-best in the conference.

The No. 10-ranked Mountaineers (3-0-1) face two top-15 opponents in No. 12 Duke and top-ranked North Carolina at the Duke Nike Classic ... the last time WVU played two ranked opponents in the same weekend was in 2002, when the Mountaineers defeated No. 14 Rutgers on Nov. 8, 2002, and fell to No. 10 Connecticut, 1-0, on Nov. 10.

West Virginia opened its home schedule by defeating Central Michigan, 4-0, on Aug. 30 to give coach Nikki Izzo-Brown her 250th-career win ... the Mountaineers moved to 3-0-1 after downing Morehead State, 2-0, on Sept. 1.

Senior forward Frances Silva has tallied a point in every match this season, adding a goal and two assists against Central Michigan and Morehead State ... -This Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers will have their toughest road trip of the season this week, taking on two top-5 schools … WVU travels to Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 6, for a 4 p.m. match … on Sunday, Sept. 8, WVU will take on the defending national champion, Indiana, at 8 p.m.
-Last Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia went 1-0-1 last week, defeating Central Connecticut State, 3-0, on Friday, and playing to a 2-2 draw against Radford on Monday afternoon.
-Notes and Quotes: Junior Andy Bevin paced WVU last weekend, finishing with one goal and three assists in the two matches … senior Craig Stephens, sophomores Jamie Merriam, Majed Osman and Francio Henry all added one goal apiece … in net, junior Lee Johnston made four saves and earned his first career shutout at WVU on Friday evening.
Coach Martin LeBlanc: “The easy thing to do is to point to Lee on the mistake on the second goal (on Sunday), but that was a microcosm of a number of different mistakes that were made. Obviously both teams looked tired, however for us to have as much of the ball and play as we did, to let that game go in the end is disappointing.”

The WVU volleyball team hosts the Mountaineer Invitational this Friday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 7 ... the Mountaineers will play matches at noon and 6:30 p.m. on both days, welcoming Norfolk State, Canisius, Fordham and Navy.

The West Virginia volleyball team posted a 3-0 record over the weekend, while winning the Blue/Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio ... the Mountaineers defeated Eastern Illinois, 3-1, and Loyola-Chicago, 3-0, on Saturday, and Toledo 3-0 on Sunday ... sophomore setter Brittany Sample was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, registering 119 assists in three matches ... freshman outside hitter Jordan Anderson led the team with 43 kills and recorded a double-double in each of her first three matches as a Mountaineer.
