MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 29-ranked West Virginia University cross country team finished in eighth place at the Penn State University Spike Shoe Invitational today on the PSU White & Blue golf course in State College, Pa.

Sophomore Paige Szabat led the way for the Mountaineers, crossing the finish line in 30th place. The 22:44 time is a new personal record for Szabat.

“This was a nice step for these five. Each of them improved their times by upwards of one minute or more,” coach Sean Cleary says. “I am quite pleased with what we accomplished as a program today.”

All five WVU runners ran season bests, with Szabat, junior Lydia Martinelli and freshmen Peyton Hampson and Brianna Kerekes running career bests.

Martinelli finished in 41st (23:31), senior Allison Pettit crossed the line in 42nd (23:32), Hampson in 46th (23:51) and Kerekes finished in 51st (24:45).

Penn State’s Emily Giannotti won the 6K race, finishing in 21:17. The Nittany Lions claimed the team title, sweeping the event with first through fifth-place finishes.

“We now have three weeks to prepare for our first countable competition of the season,” says Cleary. “We hope for health and great training.”

WVU returns to Lehigh University on Oct. 5 for the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. The Mountaineers earned a fourth-place finish earlier this season on the Goodman Cross Country Course at the Lehigh Invitational on Aug. 31.
