MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team begins Big 12 Conference play against Kansas State on Friday night at 6:30 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.

“Our team feels much different going into conference play this year, just like every other WVU team will, I assume,” says coach Jill Kramer. “It's nice when you can go into a match having some familiarity with your opponent and having a better understanding of what to expect from them.”

The Mountaineers (13-1) look to continue their stint of successful play, while posting a 10-0 start to the season in nonconference play – the best start in school history.

The Wildcats (12-1) have won five consecutive matches, including a 3-1 win over then-No. 23 California in Berkeley, Calif.

Senior Kaitlynn Pelger earned the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week last week, and Kansas State leads the conference in blocks.

West Virginia is celebrating its 40th Anniversary of volleyball and will honor former players during Friday night’s match.

“Friday evening will be an exciting event for both players and fans to be a part of,” Kramer says. “With the combination of opening our Big 12 Conference slate at home, celebrating our 40th year of volleyball at WVU, and welcoming yet another great team to Morgantown, it will be a lot of fun for everyone.”

WVU sophomore setter Brittany Sample was named the Most Valuable Player in two of the four nonconference tournaments won by the Mountaineers this season.

Sample currently ranks fourth in the Big 12 with 10.63 assists per set.

“We will stick to focusing on the things that make us the best team we can be night in and night out,” Kramer says. “We want to communicate well as a team, stay focused on our game plan and play point for point.”

Kansas State won both matches against the Mountaineers last season in the only two meetings between the two schools.
