MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In the final day of competition at the USAFA Invitational, West Virginia University tennis earned two third-place finishes in doubles, and earned several victories in singles play.
In doubles, sophomore Hailey Barrett
and junior Ikttesh Chahal
combined for a 8-4 victory over Air Force’s Tiffany Tran and Jocelle Rudico. The Mountaineers’ top-tandem from a year ago finished flight “alpha” in third, with a record of 3-1.
New Mexico’s duo of Dominique Dulski and Emily Olivier finished flight “alpha” 5-0 to win the doubles crown over USAFA’s Natasha Rizvi and Marcelli Magday.
In flight “bravo”, sophomore Vivian Tsui
and freshman Oana Manole
downed Chrissie Hoolahan and Courtney Schulte of UNC, 8-4, to claim a third place finish.
Wyoming’s Christa Gecheva and Alma Espinosa won flight “bravo”, defeating New Mexico’s Meredith Hopson and Rachana Bhat, 8-3.
In flight “alpha” singles, Barrett won her second singles match of the season, defeating Air Force’s Hueffner, 6-2, 6-1.
After taking the first set 6-4, Chahal stumbled against Colorado State’s Adriana Wojakowska, dropping the second set, 7-6 (11), and the third set, 10-2.
Tsui concluded play in flight “bravo” with her second singles match victory on the season, battling back from a first set loss to down Christa Gecheva of Wyoming, 1-6, 6-2, 10-5.
WVU tallied one victory in flight “charlie” on day three, with Freshman Kaja Mrgole
earning a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over USAFA’s Magday. Manole fell to Hilary Walters-West of Northern Colorado in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Wyoming’s Veronica Popovici won flight “alpha”, beating UNM’s Lizette Blankers in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. In flight “bravo”, Dulski of New Mexico claimed the top-spot, defeating teammate Olivier, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Buffalo’s Anamaria Candanoza beat Silviya Zhelyazkova of Wyoming, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to win flight “charlie”.
The Mountaineers continue their fall season next week at the University of Akron. Day one of competition is on Friday, Oct. 4, and play will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 6.
