Women's Soccer Cracks Top 10 in National Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team climbed eight spots to No. 10 in this week’s Soccer America Top 25 Poll.

The Mountaineers’ (8-2-2, 2-0 Big 12) move follows the team’s 2-0 showing on the road in the opening weekend of Big 12 Conference play. WVU traveled to Stillwater, Okla., on Sept. 27 and defeated the Cowgirls, 2-1. The team then snapped Baylor’s 31-match unbeaten streak with a 4-3 victory in Waco, Texas, on Sept. 29. The Mountaineers also snapped the reigning Big 12 Conference Tournament champion’s 17-match home unbeaten streak and were the first squad to score more than one goal against the Bears all season.

WVU is the highest-ranked Big 12 team in this week’s poll. The Bears (8-1-2, 1-1 Big 12) check in at No. 13, and Texas Tech (10-1-1, 1-0-1 Big 12) is ranked No. 16.

Virginia (11-0) owns the poll’s top spot, while Stanford (8-0-1) is No. 2, Notre Dame (9-1) is No. 3, UCLA (9-1) is No. 4 and Florida State (9-0-3) is No. 5.

The Mountaineers also moved up eight spots in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NCSAA)/Continental Tire Poll and check in at No. 15, one spot behind TTU. Baylor dropped eight spots to No. 20. Virginia and Stanford also hold the top two spots in this poll. UCLA ranks No. 3, Notre Dame is No. 4 and Florida State ranks No. 5.

WVU is up five spots to No. 18 in this week’s Bennett Rank. BU dropped three spots to No. 12, and TTU ranks No. 27. This poll’s top five is: Virginia, Stanford, UCLA, North Carolina and Florida State.

The SoccerTimes.com Top 25 Poll will be announced later this week.

The Mountaineers were ranked No. 22 in this week’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s Top 25 Poll, announced yesterday. The ranking is the first of the season for WVU in the poll.

The Mountaineers open a four-match homestand this week, with WVU welcoming Texas this Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Friday is a “Dollar Night,” and all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each. The game also will be a Gold Rush, and all fans are encouraged to wear gold. Additionally, children are encouraged to complete the coloring sheet found at WVUsports.com and bring it with them to the stadium gate Friday night for one free youth admission to the match. Participants also will be entered into a drawing to receive a plush Musket toy.
