MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University tennis travels to the University of Akron for the Akron Invite, its second tournament of the fall season, from Oct. 4-6.

“We are excited to continue our tournament play this weekend at Akron with a strong tournament featuring Akron, Ohio State, Cornell, and us,” says coach Miha Lisac. “Our team is continuing to focus on improvement and getting better. This weekend will be a good test for our players and for us as a team.”

The Mountaineers will open up tournament play on Friday against Cornell in doubles. WVU will close out the opening day in singles play against Akron.

On day two, the Mountaineers will battle Ohio State in singles, and come back in the afternoon against the Zips once again, this time in doubles play.

WVU is slated for singles against the Big Red on Sunday morning, and will close out the tournament against the Buckeyes in doubles play.

While at the USAFA Invitational last week, the Mountaineers tallied two third-place finishes in the doubles competition, with the duo of sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal finishing flight “alpha” with a 3-1 record, and the tandem of sophomore Vivian Tsui and freshman Oana Manole surviving flight “bravo” with a record of 2-1.

Barrett, Tsui and freshman Kaja Mrgole led WVU last week with records of 2-2 in singles play. Manole tallied her first singles victory in the Old Gold and Blue last week as well.

“We saw some things that we liked and that we have been working on,” Lisac says. “That is a good starting point, and now we are going to be working on improving on the performance we had at Air Force. This weekend is the same mentality, and we will take that mentality into all of the tournaments during the fall semester.”

Ohio State opens its fall season this weekend while in Akron. Cornell is coming off of the Cissie Leary Invitational. The doubles team of Dena Tanenbaum and Alexandra D'Ascenzo finished second in the event. D'Ascenzo leads the Big Red with a 6-1 mark, and a "B" bracket title at the Cornell Fall Invitational earlier this year. Akron competed at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., last week. Olga Shkundina played to a third place finish in flight “A” singles.
