AKRON, Ohio – West Virginia University tennis opened competition at the Akron Invitational earlier today with three singles match wins.

“We did a little bit better than we did at the USAFA Tournament,” says coach Miha Lisac. “We continue to work and do the right things, and we did a better job at that today. Unfortunately, we came up short in two doubles matches, but we played fairly well and did quite a few of the right things.”

The Mountaineers started the day with two doubles matches against Cornell. The Big Red’s Alex D’Ascenzo and Lauren Frazier defeated the duo of sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal, 8-4. Cornell’s Ryann Young and Marika Cusick completed the sweep with an 8-7 (4) win over the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole.

In singles play, WVU matched up against host Akron. In the No. 1 singles match, Barrett fell in straight sets to the Zips’ Olga Shkundina, 6-3, 6-5 (6). Sophomore Vivian Tsui dropped her third singles match this season, losing to Ksenia Berestetska, 6-4, 6-1.

Mrgole, playing in the No. 4 position, tallied her third win of the fall, besting Akron’s Madison Cohen in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-0. Manole moved to 2-3 in singles play, defeating Karolina Maksimava, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 5 slot.

Chahal was awarded the victory over the Zips’ Martina Zerbola. Chahal was holding a 3-0 lead in the first set before Zerbola went down with an injury, leaving her unable to finish the match.

“We are doing a better job of being more focused and with the basics, such as footwork,” Lisac says. “If that is the way we continue to play throughout the remainder of the tournament and the fall semester, then it is a step forward. There is another a day tomorrow and another on Sunday. I expect the players to come out, go after it and improve.“

The Mountaineers will play Ohio State tomorrow, Oct. 5, in singles at 9 a.m., and then come back at noon against Akron in doubles.
