PITTSBURGH, Pa. – West Virginia University rowing opened its fall season at the Head of the Ohio on the Allegheny River with four first-place victories.
"We had a good day coming out on the winning side of some very close races,” says coach Jimmy King. “Today's effort was good enough, but our team knows that we have a lot of work ahead of us to get where we want to be by spring."
opened the day with a first-place finish for WVU in the women’s open 1x. Verwey defeated four other rowers, three from Duquesne, with a time of 19:45.20.

WVU had two entries in the women’s open 2x, crossing the line in first and third place. The boat of Kantak and Schrand recorded a time of 17:41.46, while the duo of Kramer and Cokeley finished in 18:25.21.
The Mountaineers final race of the day featured four boats in the women’s open 4+. Rosen, Kramer, Duarte, Schrand and coxswain Sarah Dodd
led the way with 17:41.41, beating out the top boat from Marietta College by less than two seconds for first place.
Hurlbert, Cokeley, Kantak, Verwey and coxswain Morgan Leach
recorded a time of 18:00.99, good enough for sixth place. In seventh place, about 10 seconds behind, was WVU’s boat of James, Huskins, Onians, Brophy and Abigail Fondren
