AKRON, Ohio – West Virginia University tennis closed out the Akron Invite today with three wins in singles play over Cornell.

“Things continued to go well, and I think that we have shown progress in both singles and doubles,” says coach Miha Lisac. “I think this tournament was a good challenge and a good step forward for us. “

The Mountaineers began day three of the tournament with doubles play against Ohio State. The Buckeyes’ Gaby DeSantis and Sandy Niehaus defeated the No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Hailey Barrett and junior Ikttesh Chahal, 8-4.

In the No. 2 doubles match, freshmen tandem Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole fell to OSU’s Miho Kowase and Grainne O'Neill, 8-5.

Barrett earned her first singles victory of the tournament over the Big Red’s Alex D'Ascenzo, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Barrett has a singles record of 3-4 this fall.

Chahal stumbled in the No. 2 position, falling to Ryann Young, 6-5 (5), 6-3. Sophomore Vivian Tsui, playing in the No. 3 match, also battled to a first set tiebreak, but was unable to earn the win, losing 6-5 (2), 6-4.

Both Mrgole and Manole rebounded from the morning’s loss in doubles to record two more wins for WVU. Mrgole tallied her team-high fifth singles victory, defeating Cornell’s Laila Judeh is straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Manole moved to 3-4 on the fall season with a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Lauren Frazier.

Next on the schedule for the Mountaineers is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional in Charlottesville, Va., from Oct. 18-21.
