MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University cross country senior runner Sarah Martinelli
was named the Big 12 Conference’s Runner of the Week.
Martinelli helped guide the then-No. 29 West Virginia cross country team to an eighth-place finish out of 47 schools at the Paul Short Run on Oct 5, in Bethlehem, Pa. In her first race of the season, the 5-2 senior was the first Mountaineer to cross the finish line, coming in 19th place overall with a personal-best 6K time of 20:55.
In her 2013 debut, the Morgantown, W.Va., native cut nearly two minutes off of her 6k time in her first event last season (22:28), while helping West Virginia finish higher than then-No. 13 Penn State.
Martinelli’s 20:55 performance marks the best time posted by a WVU runner this fall, and sets a new personal record, beating her former time of 21:38 at the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Region.
