MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team returns to the courts at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals in Charlottesville, Va., from Oct. 18-21.

“This weekend provides us with another opportunity to continue the process of getting better,” says coach Miha Lisac. “Our strategy has not changed for this tournament. We will continue to work and to grow. This tournament is no different than any other we have competed in thus far.”

The Mountaineers will be competing with several schools in the Atlantic Region, including: Delaware, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Marshall, Maryland, Morgan State, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Radford, Richmond, St. Joseph’s, Temple, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and William & Mary.

The Atlantic Regional features eight of the ITA’s preseason top-125 singles and three doubles pairings. Julia Elbaba of Virginia is ranked No. 9 in the country, and Cindy Chala of Virginia Commonwealth University is ranked No. 50. The region’s top doubles tandem of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans of William & Mary are ranked No. 7.

WVU freshman Kaja Mrgole enters the weekend with a team-high five wins in singles play. Mrgole went 3-0 in singles at the Akron Invite two weeks ago.

Sophomore Hailey Barrett, the top-singles returner from a year ago, has a record of 3-4 this fall. In doubles, Barrett and partner junior Ikttesh Chahal lead the Mountaineers with three wins and claimed third place in flight “alpha” doubles at the United States Air Force Academy Invitational in September.

Freshman Oana Manole has tallied three wins this fall, with two coming at the Akron Invite. Manole and Mrgole paired up in doubles for the first time this fall at the Akron Invite and came away with an 8-4 victory over Akron’s Caroline Harpaintner and Madison Cohen.
